'TXT Fighter' iOS Review

The first fighting game I ever played was Super Smash Bros at my local Boston Store about 12 years ago. But technically the first "real" fighting game I played was Soul Calibur 3 for the PS2 back in 2005. I won’t deny that I was a button masher then, since I only used Raphael’s triangle attack over and over, but I have since then worked out combos and actual button sequences to use while playing games like Street Fighter. When I discovered TXT Fighter on the App Store I would soon learn that all of those combos I’ve studied and learned wouldn’t help me win these fights. Now it was all up to the speed of my fingers.
TXT Fighter is a fighting game with a twist. You don’t use the normal joystick and buttons to fight. Instead the iPhone’s keyboard is your weapon. The premise is simple: use the power of words to defeat your opponent. Two words appear on the top of the screen before any attack. The word on the left will always be only 3 or 4 letters, but when entered does minimal damage to the enemy. The word on the right will be 5 or 6 letters, but will do more damage. There is also a third word that appears once you fill a special blue meter below your health bar. This word will do massive damage to the enemy. But be careful, the less accurate you are while typing a certain word, the less damage it will do.

There are no blocking or defense mechanics in TXT Fighter. It’s constantly a battle of finger speed to see who wins first. Even on normal the game can be difficult. In fact, I couldn’t actually beat any fighter above normal difficulty (mainly because I can’t type on a touch screen). There are a total of 7 fighters including a Mexican wrestler, a ballerina, and an Irish scrapper among others. The wrestler and ballerina are the only two characters unlocked at the beginning of the game. Each fighter also has two special moves to screw up your opponent in battle (like flipping words upside-down). The only downside is that special moves must be figured out, and are somewhat hard to come by.
