For those unfamiliar with the concept of Mahjong (not to be confused with the ancient Chinese 4 player table game Mah Jongg) is basic in concept only. It is a game of matching tiles that have been stacked and interlocked on a board. As you match tiles they are removed from the board until you are left with no tiles. A Tile can only be removed if it has one side clear and cannot be moved if there is a tile on top of the one you are trying to remove. This can create some great challenges and if mastered leaves you with a great sense of accomplishment.

1001 Ultimate Mahjong has stepped up the tile matching experience offering some nice features and visuals. It was not that there was any one major innovative breakthrough with the game, but rather that Chillingo excelled at adding a lot of little touches that helped make 1001 Ultimate Mahjong feel unique. In a world that is already flooded with this style of game, it was a smart approach to make the game stand out.

Graphically this game is well presented. It offers a smooth, eye-appealing interface, with easy to use menus and great freedom in customization. Everything from the tile set, backgrounds and even the color scheme can be configured using the games build in presets. When doing 1001 of these little puzzles it is definitely a nice gesture to help keep things feeling fresh.

Gameplay is quite functional. As this is not necessarily a processor hungry iOS offering, it was a smooth play through with no gameplay glitches or lag. The controls where simple but effective; all gameplay is controlled by one figure tapping creating a relaxed, natural feel. One quick note on gameplay; There were some nice animations used for tile movement and selection. This added just a little extra polish to the overall experience that, as mentioned earlier, helps make 1001 Ultimate Mahjong stand out from the crowd.
